2012 smart city project contest.
Making our town a part of the natural environment
It is not healthy nor environmentally natural to have garbage readily accessible to wildlife. Our beautiful seaside town, Port McNeill (BC), is 2 hours north of the next major town and right smack dab in the middle of nature. We live amongst bears, cougars, wolves, eagles and other wildlife that epitomizes beautiful BC. Unfortunately though, we still have garbage containers that are open game for wildlife looking for food. Yearly, this results in "problem" bears, that eventually if not able to be relocated, are put down. I would like to use this Smart City Project money to invest in "bear proof" containers for town use and subsidize "bear proof" containers for our citizens in town. I would like to see the environmental messaging continue with local prizes given to children (and the school they represent) that paint these containers and best capture the Smart City Project message. In addition, we have an landfill on the outskirts of town that attracts hundreds of eagles throughout the year, I would like to use the remainder of the money to buy bird light reflecting deterrents. We all know that garbage is not good for eagles nor their offspring.
