Community garden shed
If we count only to the first cross street, there are around 40 houses on my block, each with a tiny yard, but a yard none-the-less. That means grass in most cases. That means a lawn mower is needed once or twice a month for 4 months. That could mean 40 lawn mowers, each one being used 5-10 times a year. Even if they are electric, or push mowers (though there are still some polluting gas mowers out there), that is such overkill in money spent and space used to store a large, rarely used object.
Solution? A community shed (we even have a green space for the shed) with 2 mowers and 2 extension cords, and a sign out sheet and shed key that a few willing neighbours take care of. (we already co-operate with tree-banding twice a year)
This not only reduces impact of "too much stuff", it promotes co-operative neighbour interaction and is a simple step towards building more community.
