Box Garden School Project
The project would involve, schools, teachers, children and their families. In early spring, the children and their teachers would begin by planting seeds to grow veggies or fruit suitable in their growing zones. The kids can watch their seedlings grow in the classroom and eventually move then outside into box gardens (once frost is no longer a risk). Part of the project would also be to water the the plants during recess and watch for insects eating the leaves. By the time school ends, families will have the opportunity to take the boxes home to plant in the backyard or keep the box on the balcony all summer long. In September, when school has resumed, kids can talk to their teachers about how things turned out with their own gardens and what they learned. It promotes lifelong values, encourages healthly lifestyles and education about the environment and how things grow...fun :)
