2012 smart city project contest.
To compost and use rain water for rooftop community gardens on top condominiums.
A chance for large condominiums in the downtown core to compost and use rain water catchers for a rooftop community garden on top of their building. Many Torontonians suffer from Nature Deficit Disorder, and it would add to the general well-being of the high-rise dwellers with little access to gardens or parks. The project would include initial set up of edible gardens, a tutorial of how to maintain the garden and continued support for the first year, including seasonal workshops, (seeding, planting, harvesting, preserving, preparing for winter).
The condos chosen would be visible in the flight path to the Billy Bishop Toronto City (Island) Airport, showcasing a greener Toronto to all visitors.
Many Condos don't have the option to even compost, so this would be a radical change to what is available in these highly condensed areas.
I have been in contact with the environmental charity Evergreen Brickworks and would take them on as an advisor for the project.
The people maintaining and benefiting from the gardens would be residents of the condominiums.
This project, if chosen, would be a perfect way to create a healthier environment for Toronto and would inspire, educate and sustain the people living in this metropolis we call home.
