Mobile solar coffee stands AV-TOR
My name is Colin Campbell and I am lucky to have two passions in life, triathlon and sustainability. As a professional triathlete and entrepreneur, I aspire to push my limits in both. Over the past year, alongside getting my pro card, competing at World Championships and working as a Business Sustainability Consultant at Canadian Tire, I’ve also been working on a start-up called PowerBarr, a company making solar charging stations for consumer electronics. It has been an amazing journey so far, going through two product design cycles and coming up with the solar charging station we’ve just introduced to the market. This start-up will be launching a Kickstarter campaign in November aiming to bring solar charging stations to the Greater Toronto Area.
As a result of my involvement with this start-up, combined with having a strong relationship with a triathlon event management company in Ontario, a SMART idea was born. That smart idea is to introduce mobile solar coffee stands to the market! Plugging into the PowerBarr, coffee drinkers will be able to buy a coffee brewed from renewable energy, resulting in a significantly smaller carbon footprint. Coffee drinkers will now be able to charge up their mobile devices using renewable energy and get the energy they need at the same time. Aside from having a minimal physical footprint, being mobile and solar means it can pretty much go anywhere. The coolest part about the story is that the coffee is processed from solar power as well. The women’s cooperative in Honduras where it comes from uses solar power to process the bean. Traditionally, rainforest would be cut down and burned. Now, by using solar power it eliminates the release of CO2 into the atmosphere, in turn positively impacting the local community and environment.
With a perspective of looking at life as one big opportunity, the name Full Cup Coffee has come to be. We could all use a cup of optimism and inspiration anyway.
My vision is to design a compact “stand-in-bag†for ease in transportation and setup, and to bring Full Cup Coffee to triathlons and athletic events around the world. And the wheels are already in motion. With a friend, a designer at one of Canada’s late telecommunications companies, we have begun designing the stand and solar awning. During the 2014 triathlon race season in Ontario, Full Cup Coffee will be present at all Multisport Canada events. The plan is to develop the idea to give others, athletes in particular, an opportunity to setup their own businesses to help support athletes on their journey to the podium. The sales of coffee mugs at each stand will go a step further to supporting kids in the playground as well; making a donation for every mug sold to Jumpstart, a charity helping give kids a sporting chance. From the playground to the podium, this idea will help make a healthier environment and strengthen communities, in Canada and aboard.
Lastly, launching this idea using an electric vehicle for transportation of the compact stand to events would be the icing on the cake of cool factors in the ‘story behind the cup’!
