We’re running out of time with climate change. We need something to shake us out of our sense of complacency. This is it. The labels create feedback by taking faraway consequences – like famine, the extinction of species and extreme weather – and bringing them into the here and now. Their placement on a gas nozzle reminds us that we each contribute to the problem by locating responsibility right in the palm of your hand. Finally, the idea captures the hidden costs of fossil fuel use in a qualitative way; the labels provide information to the marketplace to engage our sense of humanity in a way that a price increase of a few pennies at the pump never will. Municipalities can use their licensing powers to require gasoline retailers to place the warning labels on their gas pumps. We have developed a database with the contact information of every single municipal representative in our country so Canadians can easily advocate for our idea in their own community. Passing this by-law will attract international attention and it will quickly spread from there. Over 50 countries in the world have warning labels on their cigarette packages. Citizens in these places have been cognitively primed to adopt our concept. The labels will cause some individuals to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions but, more importantly, they will create a shift in our collective demand that will facilitate meaningful action on climate change. Politicians will have more popular support to pass climate change legislation and businesses will innovate to meet the needs of a shifting market. The idea is a game-changer.

If a new road has to go in and it is not going in the same place plant trees and grass where the old road was. And make sure every new building project has a combination of grass and trees in front of it.

Why isn't it a norm to use geothermal energy for heating homes? Solar rooftops and green house terraces to grow individual kitchen gardens part of standard home design? Isn't rail far more fuel efficient than cars and fewer traffic jams? Still few cities use it as the main mode of transport! Railway platforms and other high traffic areas could trap the mechanical energy of people's footsteps and convert to electrical energy. Prevent flooding of basements by moving sumps outside the home. Build commercial around residential spaces so people can reduce commute to work.

The biggest deterent keeping children from playing with their neighbours outside is traffic on streets. If streets didn't have so much traffic, parents would let their kids roam around, giving them greater freedom and independence. We need to design neighbourhoods for kids, not cars. Cities can identify already car quiet streets and block small parts off so kids can congregate and play. Phase two would be identifying places where traffic could be rerouted to increase this pedestrian/play friendly space and phase three would be to regulate all future development to plan spaces for children playing together, not cars getting from point A to B.

the idea of a bike lane is not new; the issue with bike lanes in the street is the danger that mixing bike traffic with car traffic. It is statistically safer to have the bike traffic in the sidewalks, but that also interferes with the pedestrian traffic. So having a dedicated bike lane on the very end or edge next to the street is what should be done. The bikes have their dedicated bike lane but "away" from the street. Just that few inches higher protection will be enough of deterrent for most car/bike collisions to be preventable. The concept I decided to call it side-ride©, for its close name relation with the side-walk...

Where possible such a small islands or islets around mainlands, on the islets anyware from say 1000 square feet and up within limits, we have Windmill on the rock foundation, not in water, surround by Solar Panels, then around the islet we have wave catchers where weather permits, if frozen water then only windmill and Solar, these tie in by one line to mainland then to booster station, around a island and say dozen of these, you have good natural electrical power, good for coastlines and small island countries, also lakes such as Great Lakes. thank you, Clive McFarlane

My idea of a Smart City is to have a great transportation infrastructure system, that the GTA seriously lacks. It means expanding the subway from strictly the Toronto area to the GTA, the entire GTA, so that the entire city is accessible by transit. It means converging all the transit systems such as YRT, BRT, TTC etc into ONE SYSTEM, called the Greater Toronto Transit Network. This would save the province a lot of money, create jobs for people, and improve the transit network. Roads and highways are important too, but for day to day use, transit is key. We need to have just one transit system, so that it is easily accessible. If I had any power to decide, this is what I would do.

Every resource saving idea and any reduction in damage created by humans requires an effort by government to reward involved people ! Government should bear the responsibility for rewarding citizens for cleaner living . If your car does not pollute that should count. If one recycles composts uses more efficient lights these and any other smart choices should come with an energy credit , applied to tax forms .Why does it cost a fortune for a car that doesn't use gas ? Shouldn't government be more involved in a solution to cleaner living we have to start somewhere and most people are affected by tax incentives.

our town of napanee, ontario is big enough to have a small transit system. It would reduce the need to have so many vehicles on the road, thus reducing the emissions that are being let out into the air...

Winnipeg's Brady land fill, has combustible gases, which are being generated by the decaying refuse. Add electric generators, driven by engines which will run on this combustible gas, to all the Hospitals. If there happens to be a power outage, the hospitals and patients are still safe and secure.

Winnipeg has bus only lanes during rush hours. Change signage to "Buses, Bicycles and Mopeds only" on these lanes. This would be a safer lane for the individuals. Also, If you own & license a Bicycle/Moped you get a discount on your Manitoba Public Insurance (Autopac) on your 4 wheel vehicles. Increase the Bike racks. Especially Downtown, at Malls.and at Grocery stores. Discounts on wagons for Bicycles/Mopeds, to incourage using bicycles/Mopeds to Malls & Grocery stores. Have the City Council ceate bylaw stating bicycles/Mopeds with wagons have 'Right-of-Way' in heavy traffic.

Eagle Bay is located on Shuswap Lake. We have alot of tourists as well as our own population and there is no place to recycle. Result: garbage on roads, bottles on beaches, and a general mess in the summertime. Our nearest recycling unit is several miles away in Sorrento. We really need this!
